Choose what you are actually willing to book
Write down your departure airports, destination, passenger count, cabin and latest acceptable arrival before opening the search. Decide whether your dates are fixed or flexible. An alert is useful only when the trip it describes works for you.
For a family trip, compare the number of tickets you need rather than planning around a single-seat headline. For a weekend away, count the nights at the destination and airport transfer time before deciding which option deserves an alert.
Fixed dates or Any dates?
Selected dates monitor the trip you searched. Any dates is the flexible-route option. Choose deliberately rather than assuming every alert is tied to one date pair.
A useful personal setup is one essential itinerary plus a small number of alternatives you would really accept. Label those alternatives in your own trip notes: acceptable weekend, nearby airport, or longer stay. This is a suggested workflow, not a setting that Google automatically applies.
An email is a prompt to compare the whole trip
Use the date grid or price graph to compare travel dates. A price insight is an estimate, not a held ticket. Check the baggage filter too: it can include bag fees in displayed comparisons, but confirm the airline’s allowance and final total.

If you are not receiving useful alerts
Open the saved route and check that it matches the trip you still want. Remove an obsolete search instead of collecting more alerts for unusable dates. An empty inbox alone does not tell you whether a better itinerary exists.
Keep a short booking note with the fare you can accept, your deadline and a fallback. When a message arrives, compare it against that note before restarting the same search indefinitely.
