Separate flexible dates from an open destination
You can know that you want to fly from London to Rome while remaining flexible about the weekend. You can also know only your departure city and have no destination in mind. Those are different searches, even though neither starts with exact dates.
Write down the constraint you do know: departure area, destination if chosen, maximum trip length and acceptable travel months. Keep school, work and arrival commitments in that note. Flexible does not have to mean available every day.
Track a known route without fixing the dates
Search the route in Google Flights and choose Any dates for tracking. Selected dates is the other option when you need to watch an exact trip. Use Tracked Flights to manage saved searches and notifications.
When a result interests you, use the date grid or price graph to compare actual journeys. A route alert helps you notice an opportunity, but you still need a departure and return that fit your calendar before booking.
Discover a destination from your departure area
Flare departure pages offer another starting point when the destination is open. Browse observed fare drops, open a destination that interests you and examine the available dates.
Flare compares fares with a route reference described in its methodology. That reference may use historical observations or a distance-based estimate. A discount does not guarantee the lowest possible price, a future reduction or seats for your group.
Turn a flexible idea into a complete comparison
For each candidate, write the travel dates, nights away, final ticket total, required bags and airport transport. Compare the whole trip against the same budget before treating the lowest headline fare as the best option.
Illustrative comparison: a €90 ticket requiring an extra €100 hotel night costs €190 for those two items. A €150 ticket without that extra night costs €40 less on the same limited comparison. These invented figures are not current fares and exclude every other expense.
Check the provider’s live total and itinerary before paying. An alert does not reserve the price. If none of the dates works, keep the destination as an idea instead of treating the notification as an obligation to book.
